Sam OCTOBER MONTHLY RIDE Eleven members met at the Wyre, Skippool in cloudy, calm conditions, hoping to complete most of the projected ride in the dry and started by crossing Shard Bridge and keeping close to the River Wyre as far as Cartford Bridge to collect 3 more. Lancaster Road was used to get to Pilling, then across the sands to Cockerham and Conder Green where the route switched off-road along the tarmac of the old railway line to Lancaster Quays. The first half of this section was pure Autumn with dry, crunchy leaves to ride over (at times losing sight of the road surface), but nearer to Lancaster, the first spots of light rain began to fall. This caused a split in the group for various reasons - some on lightweight summer machines with clothing to match, others not fancying the extended ride if the forecast for rain for the rest of the day proved correct. Those returning early used the A6 to reach Bay Horse and the nearby Pinewood Garden Centre for the late morning brew before making a run for home. The remaining 6 continued along the cycle track to meet Stan Wilkinson at the Crook o'Lune to make a "magnificent seven" who exited onto the main road shortly afterwards to progress via Claughton and Hornby to Gressingham. Upwards now from this village to reach the north side of the Lune Valley, then climbing the shallow side of Capernwray, the group had to exercise caution on the descent....fast and fairly straight to start and finish with, but very wet and shiny-looking in the middle Z-bends as they approached Borwick and the lunch stop at Greenlands Farm Centre. Donning waterproofs to set off in the direction of Burton, the group took up Stan's suggestion to try the shallower, smoother ascent via Dalton village to access Hutton Roof and the furthest point of the route at Whittington. The villages of Newton and Arkholme were passed as they used the undulating roads past the Redwell Inn to Higher Halton where Stan headed for home, leaving the rest to swoop down Green Lane to Crook o'Lune and enter the Quernmore Valley, plodding on in continuous rain to get to the second, welcome stop at Scorton. Warmed over nicely, the return journey home via Nateby and Out Rawcliffe was quite sprightly with a total of 80 miles covered on reaching the start point at the Wyre. Extremes of menus were thrown up by the wet, cool weather....full fish and chips by one at Lunch, then use of inverse psychology by ordering a banana sundae by one at Afternoonses, thinking that by eating something cold would make it seem warmer when going outside again...mmmmm - interesting!? Despite the lack of a weather window on this ride, the full route was achieved by some...but next month I can forsee the use of overshoes to combat the wet, cold feet syndrome. Peter Shuttleworth.
